More followers and an important Question

I made it back from PA on Tues evening, and have a lot to post about including pictures. First, I'd like to welcome new followers; Levonne, an RV campground host; Ron, the Old Geezer; Ferree, of the Widow's Christiane Place; and Gypsy 68, who is now re-modeling her home. I enjoy reading all these blogs, (and need to catch up soon ... whew!) and want to thank you all for following along with me.

As I need to leave tomorrow for my youngest's wedding in TX, I wanted to ask this question before I go and hope to get some answers. I was very disappointed in my RV's gas mpg and want to know what is a realistic expectation. I averaged about 7 - 7 1/2 mpg, all miles. My RV is a 21' Chevy class C, 350 engine and the year is '89. So.... if you all could let me know what your make and model, engine size and mpg, I would have a good idea if I need to trade up or stay with what I have. I am able to trade if I could get a better fuel milage to make it worth while. I plan on taking my RV to TX and possibly trading down there, or if not worth the up-grade for fuel efficiency, I would opt to drive my Trail-Blazer @ 17 mpg. Please help?

If you choose not to give this info I understand, but would greatly appreciate all who are willing to do so. Thanks!

  1. Hi Sunny, I have a '96 ClassC, 22' Coachmen motorhome. It's a Ford E350. I averaged 9.33mpg on my way from Texas to Ky to Pa & back. I suspect I might get a little better if I got a tune up, but probably not much better. There are some newer ClassC's, such as the View on the mecerdes chasis that get much better mileage than the Ford or Chevy types, but they cost more too.
I usually run my dash a/c till I can get into cooler areas, then I shut it off to save on the gas a bit. I've not had to really run my generator while driving since my rig is small enough to cool the entire rig while driving by using just the dash air.
If you don't mind my asking, where in Texas are you heading?
I think the average for most ClassC's is around 9-10mpg. That's what I've gathered from reading other people's responses on other forums & from what friends say they've gotten too. There's an older Ford model (before '96), but I can't remember what it was that was a huge gas sucker.

  2. Hi Tex-Cyn. Thanks for reply. I am heading to east side of Dallas, White Lake area. Maybe if I kept my speed at 60 mph I'd do a tad better but not sure. I didn't have to use my a/c at all going to or from PA and still got only the stated mpg :-/ It probably wouldn't matter to me that much if I wasn't under such scheduled trips this fall. After the first of the year I plan to go to AZ and make some leisurely stops along the way. I will be in the Tucson area for a month or better.

  3. I wish I had info to share. I have a feeling that trip included a lot of up and down hills. Perhaps you will do better in Texas. Happy trails to you.

  4. Oh darn, I was hoping you'd be around the Houston area. I guess I'd say take your time & do some research on what you might be looking for so you'd be better prepared when you are ready to trade in.

  5. Hi Sunny,
I have a 96 Winnie Spirit V10 Ford I get 13mpg some times a little more. My rig is 23 ft.
Glad you enjoyed your trip and all went well. I know you had an oil change before you left and I think you had a tune up too. Your mileage should be better. Maybe it is the age. Not sure. Could be just a newer engine on mine and only about 70K mls.
    Be safe on the road.
